چکیده

The relationships between the structural variations of a fenisol and the plant parasitic nematode communities of sugarcane were studied along three transects. These transects, about 20 m long, started in horizon A and ended in a levelled area where horizon C began. Results were analysed with the Co-inertia analysis method, which allowed us to study simultaneously the soil and nematode data. Progressive variations of the content of some physico-chemical soil elements (organic matter, phosphorus, pH) appear linked to those of the abundance of some nematode species (Heniicricoloideszenioides and Prarylenclzus). This analysis also shows relations that do not vary according to a gradient along the transects. For instance, the abundance of Helicotylenclius can be correlated with the existence of high calcium grades.

Identification of soil factors that relate to plant parasitic nematode communities on tomato and yam in the French West Indies

A soil and nematode survey of tomato and yam crops was made in Martinique (French West Indies). Each sample was divided into two parts, one for the nematode study and one for the soil analysis. The coupling of the data was made using the coinertia analysis. For tomato plants, which were grown from seeds, the nematode-soil relationships were very strong. For the two varieties of yams, Dioscorea ...

Migration and multiple sclerosis: the French West Indies experience.

The French West Indies (FWI), i.e., the islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe, have recently experienced the emergence of multiple sclerosis (MS). This epidemiological upheaval followed a return migration of the FWI population that had previously migrated to continental France. The prevalence MS was 14.8/10(5) (95% CI: 11.9-17.7) on Dec. 31, 1999 and its mean annual incidence was 1.4/10(5) (95% ...

Leishmania (Leishmania) martiniquensis n. sp. (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae), description of the parasite responsible for cutaneous leishmaniasis in Martinique Island (French West Indies)

The parasite responsible for autochthonous cutaneous leishmaniasis in Martinique island (French West Indies) was first isolated in 1995; its taxonomical position was established only in 2002, but it remained unnamed. In the present paper, the authors name this parasite Leishmania (Leishmania) martiniquensis Desbois, Pratlong & Dedet n. sp. and describe the type strain of this taxon, including i...

Chlordecone exposure and adverse effects in French West Indies populations

Chlordecone (Kepone) is an organochlorine insecticide that has been used as insecticide and fungicide. In the French West Indies, Guadeloupe and Martinique, it was intensively applied to banana fields from 1973 to 1993 to control root borers. This pesticide undergoes no significant biotic or abiotic degradation in the environment and is still present in soils where it was applied. It was only i...

Genetic characterization of newly reintroduced dengue virus type 3 in Martinique (French West Indies).

Dengue type 3 viruses were isolated from patients in Martinique between 1999 and 2002. This serotype had not been detected on the island in the last 20 years. Genomic sequence determination and analysis showed great stability of the virus during the period studied.
